Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and World-Class Senior Care at University of Rochester Medical Center

One of the oldest and most recognized programs in the country, the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship develops clinicians, educators and investigators who are leaders in our field. Our fellows will find a welcoming, collegial atmosphere and wide-ranging opportunities for experience in a variety of settings. There is flexibility in the program, and it is not uncommon for fellows to tailor tracks to fit their needs during training as their learning objectives and career goals evolve.

Why Choose Our Program?

Our fellows most commonly reference the personal relationships and valuable mentoring they receive as one of the top reasons why they would recommend URMC. Furthermore, an emphasis on work/life balance is an important reason fellows choose URMC. A focus on trainees' well-being enables you to learn and thrive in Rochester.

Highland Hospital: World-Class Care for Seniors

Highland geriatricians are recognized nationally as clinical experts and highly sought after, yet are truly compassionate and accepting new patients. Our team has set standards for geriatrics care with hospitals around the globe adopting some of our programs. Highland Hospital has been recognized as an Age-Friendly Health System and our emergency department was the first in Upstate New York to earn Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation.

Specialized Clinical Services

  • In the Hospital: With one of the largest teams of Geriatrics Hospitalists in the region, we provide exceptional in-patient care.
  • In the Doctor’s Office: Our outpatient practice, Geriatrics and Medicine Associates, combines geriatricians with many other specialties, offering fully coordinated care.
  • In a Senior Living Facility: Our physicians provide on-site medical care to residents at partner senior living facilities and are experts at managing the complex care of older adults.
  • Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit: This unit is focused solely on the caring for seniors where staff and volunteers visit regularly to reduce chances of physical and mental decline.
  • Geriatric Fracture Center: Our first-of-its-kind program is dedicated exclusively to elderly patients who suffer fractures.

UR Medicine Geriatrics Group

UR Medicine Geriatrics Group is comprised of more than 30 health care professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Our physicians are some of the most highly trained Geriatric specialists in the region, and experts at managing the often complex care of older adults. We provide on-site medical care to residents at partner nursing homes, and we make house calls to residents at partner senior living communities in and around the Rochester area. Because we provide care to our patients right where they live, we can discuss diagnoses and treatment plans in a more relaxed and private environment.

What is a Geriatrician?

A Geriatrician is an attending physician for older patients while they are in the hospital. This group of highly trained and experienced geriatricians are experts at managing the complex care of older adults, and they work closely with other physician specialists to achieve the best results for each patient. Our geriatricians act as liaisons between patients and their loved ones, their medical teams, and their nursing homes or senior living communities. They keep everybody in the loop concerning treatment plans, day-to-day progress, and any necessary follow-up arrangements.
