Biomedical Sciences - BSc (Hons) at Toronto Metropolitan University

Welcome to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)’s Faculty of Science, a powerhouse of leading-edge applied research and education located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Our undergraduate programs are a careful blend of scientific theory and experience, each leading to an Honours Bachelor of Science university degree. In the Biomedical Sciences - BSc (Hons) program, you will gain theoretical and practical expertise in the cellular and molecular sciences.

Program Overview and Learning Opportunities

In our Biomedical Sciences degree program, you'll have opportunities to research important health issues like how cells turn cancerous and how genes influence aging. Labs and real-world experiences working with our biomedical industry partners will help you develop a deep understanding of molecular and cell biology, genetics and genomics, and microbiology. You’ll also get to work on laboratory research, preparing you for a career in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

The program is available in the following Full-time formats:

  • 4 Year
  • 5-Year Co-op

Experiential Learning and Co-op

An optional paid co-op will provide you with additional opportunities to gain experience. Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the curriculum; as Alyona Ivanova, Biomedical Sciences Class of 2022, noted: “I think what helped me the most was getting a lot of experience in the lab because I was able to develop all of the necessary skills for conducting translational research. What was also helpful was learning how to design experiments, as it forms the basis for research discovery.”

Required Academic Courses

To successfully complete the degree, students must fulfill several required courses, including:

  • BLG 143 Biology I and BLG 144 Biology II
  • CHY 103 General Chemistry I and CHY 113 General Chemistry II
  • PCS 120 Physics I and PCS 130 Physics II
  • MTH 131 Modern Mathematics I
  • PSY 102 Introduction to Psychology I
  • SCI 180 Orientation (graded on a pass/fail basis)
  • One course from Table A - Lower Level Liberal Studies

Admission Requirements for Ontario High School Students

To be considered for admission, Ontario high school students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
  • Completion of 6 Grade 12 U or M courses with a minimum overall average of 70%.
  • Completion of the following required Grade 12 U courses (minimum grade of 70% in each): English/anglais (ENG4U/EAE4U preferred), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and 2 of Physics (SPH4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Biology (SBI4U).

Due to competition, the average needed for admission can fluctuate each year as it depends on the number of applications received and the number of spaces available. If you haven’t been educated in Ontario, you may be considered with the equivalent of the Ontario requirements.

Career and Educational Pathways

The Biomedical Sciences program serves as a stepping stone to self-discovery and diverse professional futures. Graduates can explore various Career possibilities:

  • Biomedical technologist
  • Biophysicist
  • Biostatistician
  • Epidemiologist
  • Genetic counsellor

Graduates find success with various Employer possibilities, such as Biofect Innovations, Public Health Ontario, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Hospital, and Trillium Health Partners. Furthermore, the degree prepares students for Further education in Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Molecular Science (MSc), and Pharmacy.
