PhD in Public Health with a Concentration in Global Communicable Disease

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at USF Health is offered through the Global Communicable Disease track. Graduates of the doctoral program will be qualified to conduct fundamental and applied research in the identification, evaluation, and prevention of tropical and communicable diseases. The program offers a distinguished teaching and research program that provides a sound basis for doctoral study while encompassing a wide variety of research interests.

Research Focus and Career Opportunities

Some of the major areas that our faculty’s research programs focus upon (and research areas available for a PhD candidate’s research and training) include:

• Genomics
• Molecular Parasitology
• Infectious Disease Control
• Infectious Disease Ecology

Doctoral students are required to work on a funded research project with the faculty that they have chosen to work with. Students will learn to present their data and research at conferences and how to manage the work in the lab. Students who pursue the Global Communicable Disease PhD can potentially become postdoctoral researchers in organizations outside of USF. They are also prepared to take on leadership positions either in the lab or in the field, potentially overseeing their own lab or even transferring those skills to the private sector. Private sector research in pharmaceutical companies is a potential path for students who do not want to remain in academia.
