Occupational Therapy Graduate Programs: MSOT Bridge and Doctoral Pathways

Occupational therapists work in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, corporations, private practices, schools, and many others. They help people across the lifespan through the therapeutic use of everyday occupations, working with and improving the lives of diverse individuals with a variety of conditions, including people with developmental, physical, and psychological disabilities.

The Hybrid MSOT Bridge Program

Advance from OTA or PTA to a licensed Occupational Therapist through Belmont’s hybrid MSOT Bridge Program — a flexible, accredited pathway designed for working professionals who want to lead in the field. This bridge program allows licensed occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) and physical therapy assistants (PTAs) to continue working while earning their graduate degree and preparing for licensure as an occupational therapist. Belmont’s OTA to MOT bridge program empowers you to enhance your leadership, critical thinking and advocacy skills while transitioning into your next professional role.

Key Features of the MSOT Bridge

  • Hybrid flexibility: Balance your coursework with your current job through a mix of online learning and limited on-campus sessions.
  • Accredited and proven: Fully accredited by ACOTE with a consistently strong NBCOT pass rate.
  • Expert faculty: Learn from practicing clinicians and researchers with specialties in pediatrics, geriatrics, assistive technology and more.
  • Emerging practice areas: Explore evolving fields like pelvic health, primary care and community-based practice.
  • Supportive network: Join a nationwide community of Belmont OT alumni — leaders, advocates and educators making a difference in their communities.

Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) and OTD Options

A rewarding and fast-growing career in Occupational Therapy begins with obtaining either a Doctorate (Entry-Level OTD) or a Master's degree (MSOT). SJSU's MSOT program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). This national reputation for excellence is based on a superior academic curriculum, distinguished faculty, and accomplished graduates, satisfying the requirement to meet 189 standards established for OT academic programs.

In addition to the current MSOT program, the new Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program has begun as of Spring 2023. This OTD program is designed to develop occupational therapy leaders, advocates, and innovators with a clear focus on community engagement and social justice for underserved populations. San Jose State University obtained WSCUC approval to offer an Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) degree as of May 2021.

Accreditation and Performance Overview

The following table summarizes the accreditation status and performance benchmarks for the programs mentioned:

Program Type Accreditation Status Recognition / Ranking
MSOT (SJSU) 10-year accreditation (awarded 2016) #2 for best OT Programs in California (#30 nationwide)
Entry-Level OTD Status of Accreditation for 7 years (granted August 2025) Focus on community engagement and social justice
MSOT Bridge (Belmont) Fully accredited by ACOTE Consistently strong NBCOT pass rate

Fieldwork and Clinical Experience

All students must complete fieldwork in addition to their academic studies in order to be prepared for their careers. Belmont’s occupational therapy assistant bridge program offers the flexibility to complete your 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork close to home, designing personalized placements that meet ACOTE standards and your career goals. Furthermore, senior occupational therapy students participate in several types of clinics as a practicum. These on-campus clinics allow students to gain essential skills and help a future OT discover the therapeutic impact of the profession.

Financial Aid and Alumni Support

Belmont’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program is launching a new benefit for the alumni community through the MSOT Alumni Referral Scholarship. When you refer a prospective student to the MSOT program who enrolls, that applicant will receive a $2,500 tuition discount each year of the two-year program — a $5,000 total scholarship. This scholarship is a way of honoring the role alumni play in helping future OTs find their path.
