Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ – Martin Luther King, Jr. At McGovern Medical School, we believe it is fitting to give back to the community that is contributing to the training of our future physicians. While we hope to make a beneficial impact to our surrounding areas, we also know that serving others results in a truly profound impact on the participants.
The 14th of April was the eighth McGovern Medical School Day of Service. On this day, 100+ students, faculty, and staff participated in service to the Houston community. Through the McGovern Kindness Initiative, we recognize that in the midst of such challenging times, acts of kindness can initiate a limitless positive ripple effect. Random acts of kindness are critical to our well-being as they necessitate empathy, selfless behavior, and social contact.
Furthermore, UTHealth Cares is a student-driven interprofessional collaborative designed to uniquely address the health concerns of Houston’s underserved populations through substantive community engagement.
For Tzu Chi USA Southern Region volunteers in Houston, Texas, there is a group of “old friends” residing at The Lev at Town Park, a skilled nursing and assisted living facility that provides long-term care for older adults with limited mobility or family support. For more than 30 years, Tzu Chi volunteers have visited every month, rain or shine, to bring care and warmth to the residents, many of whom live alone, building deep friendships and bonds of enduring love.
The volunteer team designs interactive activities during their monthly visits, bringing comfort to the residents’ bodies and minds. These efforts include:
Volunteer Shioubih Yang, who has a nursing background, understands residents' worries and concerns, making them feel cared for and supported. This support helps ease unnecessary misunderstandings and fears, particularly for those facing language barriers or difficulty adjusting to American food and facility procedures.
The Women in Neurosurgery (WINS) organization also facilitates community outreach. We’re looking for volunteers to help with intake, meal prep, food service, and laundry at the Beacon homeless service event. This initiative provides essential support for Houston's vulnerable populations.
