Each year, more medical residents choose Peru for a global health elective. We offer a complete program: clinical rotations, a CME-accredited medical Spanish course, and weekly community health fairs in underserved areas. Global health experience exposes you to new pathologies, resource-limited medicine, and a broader clinical perspective. Few rotations also help you build Spanish language skills you can use throughout your career—ours does.
Medical Electives Peru is based in the colonial city of Trujillo and works with major teaching hospitals and smaller community hospitals. Residents rotate in Peru’s public healthcare systems (ESALUD or MINSA) and may also gain experience in NGO clinics serving patients with limited resources. Popular rotations include Emergency Medicine, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine, though all main specialties are available. Some staff speak English, but not all—creating a valuable cross-cultural learning environment.

At Medical Electives Peru, residents join us primarily for our intensive medical Spanish immersion. You’ll study four hours per day with a team of experienced language teachers and physicians, focusing on conversation, grammar, clinical communication, and real-world medical Spanish you can use immediately with patients. This isn’t a phrase-based course. It’s designed to help you speak comfortably and clinically in Spanish, both inside and outside the hospital. It offers up to 128 CME credits from the American Academy of Family Physicians, underscoring the quality of our programs. We welcome residents at every level—from complete beginners to advanced speakers.
Community health fairs offer valuable opportunities for residents to practice their medical skills and language. At these fairs, residents provide free consultations and medicine to a diverse patient demographic, fostering community engagement and hands-on experience in a supportive setting. Furthermore, pharmacy professionals can develop their abilities through Spanish for Pharmacists International Rotations, gaining hands-on experience in clinical settings.
Staying with local host families provides residents with a comfortable living environment, access to Wi-Fi, and deeper integration into the community. This homestay experience enhances cultural immersion and offers a supportive backdrop for their residency journey. Our home city, Trujillo, offers a safe, modern base with a beautiful Spanish-colonial center, the surf town of Huanchaco, and nearby archaeological sites, including Chan Chan and Huacas del Sol y la Luna. Outside of Trujillo, you can visit the wine region of Cascas or fly to Cusco to explore Machu Picchu—either over a long weekend or at the end of your rotation.
Spanish fluency is a significant advantage for U.S. residents—especially in hospitals serving the 45+ million Spanish-speaking patients nationwide. Patient outcomes improve when patients receive care in their primary language. You can physically see signs of relief when you use medical Spanish with patients to establish a positive rapport and understand their situation. You have more confidence and insight on patient conversations when using interpreters because you know basic medical Spanish and common medical Spanish phrases for your most common patient scenarios.
