Dr. Kimberly Manning and Dr. Ashley McMullen are two dope academic internists who use the power of storytelling to explore the human side of medicine, along with teaching, living, learning, and all things in between. Words have the power to affect us for life, and their work highlights how being a human doctor also depends on the human staff and other healthcare professionals who help us see our patients in ways that we often miss.
Often as educators we learn as much, if not more, from our students than the lessons we impart. In educational settings, when we teach matters just as much as what we teach. This week, Kimberly shares some lessons on gratitude and perspective learned from the incredible patients at Grady Hospital, while Ashley reflects on an early challenge she faced as an educator and what she learned in the process. Furthermore, commemorating meaningful life events looks different for every person and every occasion; yet, it's always worth asking whether these moments of celebration reflect something genuine.
The ACP PRN Podcast is the podcast that talks about residents' life, it covers various topics that concern residents during their residency, it talks about their journey, what it is like to be a patient's advocate, how to prepare for life during and after residency, physicians wellness, and many more topics. Simply, it talks about residents social life, as needed. Transition is always tough, especially during your residency training. Transitioning from being a medical student to an intern, or from an intern to a senior resident and finally from a senior resident to chief resident or attending is always a tough & challenging time.
Burnout is an important subject between doctors and internists, it is a big problem and we need to shed the light on it. To address these professional challenges, programs focus on physicians wellness and the need for women empowerment in medicine and healthcare. On the clinical front, vaccines are very important; they are an essential part of preventive medicine and patient care. Additionally, the medical community continues to address serious societal issues, such as reducing firearm injuries and deaths in the United States.
The following table outlines the key areas discussed by medical professionals and educational platforms mentioned in the material:
| Category | Key Focus Areas |
|---|---|
| Professional Development | Residency transitions, burnout, physician wellness, and life after residency. |
| Humanistic Medicine | Storytelling, gratitude, perspective from patients, and health equity. |

We are super proud to introduce the first Illinois local ACP podcast. At ACP PRN podcast, we cover various subjects about residents & residency and interview experts about subjects that matter to residents. This includes discussions on Differences Matter — UCSF School of Medicine and the 44th Annual Mossell Lecture on Health Equity with Dr. Manning. As a current medical student noted, these stories are impactful and reassure learners that they can remain deep feelers even in a field like medicine that sometimes strips that away.
