Business Administration: Healthcare Management Degrees

Healthcare management is a growing field that combines an interest in healthcare with a passion for business. This field offers opportunities for individuals to get involved in healthcare from a management perspective, making it an attractive career choice for those interested in both healthcare and business. Healthcare managers work to optimize processes to improve patient care. They focus on managing staff, handling finances, and ensuring that all regulations are followed.

Associate in Science (AS) in Business Administration: Healthcare Management Option

This major will prepare students with the content and competencies to support their passion for helping people in a healthcare setting. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills that can help healthcare facilities such as hospitals, community health networks, long-term care facilities, private medical practices, and insurance companies operate effectively to serve the needs of society. The A.S. in Business Administration: Healthcare Management Option is mainly delivered in person, with the possibility of taking some courses in alternative modalities such as hybrid, online synchronous, and online asynchronous.

Online Degree Program

Beginning in the Fall 2025 semester, the Business and Technology Department will offer a fully online degree program in Business Administration: Healthcare Management Option. The academic requirements for this program are the same as those for the traditional A.S. in Business Administration: Healthcare Management Option. All courses will be offered in an asynchronous online format. Please contact the Business & Technology Department for more information.

AS Program Curriculum Overview

The curriculum for the A.S. degree is structured into required core, flexible core, and specialized healthcare management courses.

A. REQUIRED CORE: 12 credits

  • English: 6 credits
    • ENG101 English Composition I (3) (ENA101 depending on placement scores)
    • ENG102 Writing through Literature (3)
  • Mathematical and Quantitative Reasoning: 3 credits
    • Select one course from the following: MAT107 Mathematics and the Modern World, MAT123 Modern Problem Solving (or Depending on Placement Scores), MAT115 College Algebra and Trigonometry (MAT117 Algebra and Trigonometry depending on placement scores), MAT120 Elementary Statistics (MAT119 Statistics with Elementary Algebra depending on placement scores).
  • Life & Physical Sciences: 3 credits
    • Select one course from the following: SCB101 Topics in Biological Sciences, SCB206 Introduction to Neuroscience, SCC101 Topics in Chemistry, SCC102 Chemistry of Photography, SCP101 Topics in Physics, SCP105 Life in the Universe, SCP140 Topics in Astronomy.

B. FLEXIBLE CORE: 18 credits

Students select one course from each of the five flexible core categories AND one additional course from any flexible core category. Note: Student can select only two courses from any one discipline. Categories include World Cultures and Global Issues, US Experience in its Diversity, Creative Expression, Individual and Society, Scientific World. Students are advised to select one Urban Study course to complete college requirement. To complete the degree requirements from the Flexible Core, students are advised to select courses from the recommended course selections listed on the program website.

B. HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT: 28 Credits

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with Health Care Management Concentration

The Health Care Management concentration provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage health services such as hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, or other medical practices. This concentration is available to students in the BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and the BAS (Bachelor of Applied Science) degree programs. The Junior and Senior years of this concentration can be completed on campus or entirely online.

BBA Program Curriculum Overview

The Bachelor of Business Administration degree is a four-year degree offered through the Department of Business with a major in Business Administration and concentrations in Accounting, General Business, Health Care Management, Human Resource Management, Management, Management Information Systems, and Marketing. A minimum of 120 hours is required for graduation under this curriculum.

General Education Curriculum

In keeping with The W's Mission, the General Education Program provides students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to become independent, productive members of society in our continually changing world. The W's General Education Program provides a foundation in the liberal arts that includes knowledge in the historical, literary, aesthetic, scientific, and cultural traditions that shape the world, and fosters skills that allow students to become civically responsible life-long learners ready to adapt to new challenges. All students who complete the Mississippi University for Women general education program will demonstrate: Critical Thinking, Effective Communication, Cultural Literacy, Quantitative & Technology Skills, Understanding of Self, Global Societies, & the Natural World, Life-Long Learning.

Business Core Requirements

Required Business Courses, with a minimum grade of C or higher required, include:

Accelerated Bachelor’s/MBA Program

In the Accelerated Bachelor/MBA Program, students will take undergraduate and graduate classes at the same time, substituting some required undergraduate classes with MBA classes. You can take up to 12 of the 36 hours required for the MBA early.
