Developing scientific literacy is a critical component of modern public health. The Cooperative Extension Program Dallas County 4-H unit has implemented their first Data Detectives Club at the For Oak Cliff Community Center as part of the COVID-19-inspired Data Science Education through Epidemiology (CIDSEE).
This program is designed to empower the next generation of health professionals. The Data Detectives project — funded by the National Science Foundation — increases the youth's understanding of data principles and serves as a model for COVID Inspired Science Education through Epidemiology. By engaging with complex datasets, students learn the fundamentals of how diseases spread and are tracked in real-time.
Communication is vital to medical and wellness success. For instance, the Healthy Houston Initiative Featured on KPRC provided a platform for expert discussion. Specifically, Dean Gerard D'Souza and Dr. Carolyn Williams appeared on KPRC's Houston Newsmakers show on Nov. 29 to discuss the Healthy Houston Initiative with host Khambrel Marshall. Such initiatives ensure that health expertise reaches the broader community effectively.
A significant barrier to public health is the lack of access to information. According to The Federal Communications Commission, more than 24 million people in the U.S. lack high-speed internet access. This technological gap often means individuals don't have the skills needed to take full advantage of online resources.
This situation creates a digital divide that impacts future opportunities for young people and adults. To combat this, the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Cooperative Extension Program (CEP) received a $191,500 4-H Tech Changemakers grant to help bridge the digital divide between teens and adults.
The following table summarizes key programs focused on community health and education:
| Project Name | Primary Focus |
|---|---|
| Data Detectives (CIDSEE) | COVID-19-inspired Data Science Education through Epidemiology |
| Healthy Houston Initiative | Community health discussion and news outreach |
| 4-H Tech Changemaker Program | Bridging the digital divide between teens and adults |
Competitions also play a role in fostering these skills. Big Time in D9 is a competition for youth to showcase their knowledge and skills in various project areas on a district level. Through these diverse approaches, the Cooperative Extension Program continues growing ideas and impacting lives.
