Basic Arrhythmia Training Course (BART) - Open Arms HHC Education

The ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation (same as Basic Arrhythmia) Course is a classroom-based, Instructor-led dysrhythmia recognition course designed to improve electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation skills and pharmacology knowledge for treating cardiovascular emergencies. This is a robust and comprehensive EKG Interpretation course designed for nurses and other healthcare professionals.

ECG/EKG Dysrhythmia Interpretation is the class that most employers suggest or require during the hiring process. For example: new grad nurses applying for positions in telemetry and other units; and also nursing students prior to starting their clinical rotations. This course meets the requirement set by some employers, such as Kaiser, who specify: Completion of a robust EKG course designed specifically for nurses and/or healthcare professionals.

Course Modules and Content

ECG & Pharmacology contains two modules, ECG is the first and primary module for the course, followed by Pharmacology, which covers the medications utilized in treating ECG arrhythmias, along with pacemakers. The training includes Instructor-Lead/Facilitator Lead instruction covering heart anatomy, basic electrophysiology, and normal ECG measurements.

Arrhythmia recognition and causes, including all heart blocks and life-threatening rhythms, are central to the curriculum:

  • NSR, SB, ST, A-Flutter, A-Fib, Junctional, SVT, PAC, PVC, SVT
  • Ideoventricular, VT, VF, Asystole, PEA, Heart Blocks

Pharmacology and ACLS Integration

The pharmacology component focuses on basic ACLS drugs and usage, including drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies. Students will learn about integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms and pacing and resolving pacemaker issues.

Intended Audience

This course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who require this specialized knowledge for their job.

  • ACLS and/or PALS students as a pre-course option who complete the pre-course self-assessment and find they need to improve their knowledge
