How MBBS Doctors Can Work in Denmark – Complete DPSA, EPIC & Visa Process

Are you an MBBS doctor planning to move to Denmark for medical practice? Denmark offers excellent healthcare standards, high salaries, and a strong work–life balance. However, non-EU doctors (including Indian MBBS graduates) must go through several steps before they can work legally in Denmark. This includes EPIC verification, authorization from the Danish Patient Safety Authority (DPSA), and finally, a residence permit/visa via Nyidanmark. This article explains the complete step-by-step process clearly — simplified for international doctors by NursingManthra.

Step 1: EPIC Verification (Primary-Source Credential Verification)

The first step is to verify your MBBS degree and license through EPIC (Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials), managed by ECFMG (USA).

Required Documents and Actions:

  • Create an account on ECFMG EPIC
  • Verify your identity (EPIC Identification Form)
  • Upload required documents: Final MBBS degree, Final transcript, Current medical license (or non-registration certificate), and Passport.
  • Choose “Danish Patient Safety Authority (DPSA)” as the report recipient.

EPIC will contact your medical university directly for primary-source verification and then forward the verified report to DPSA. Usually, this process takes 1–3 months, depending on your university’s response.

⚠️ Important Note: If your medical degree is older than 6 years, you must prove at least 12 months of recent clinical experience to be eligible for recognition.

Step 2: Application with Danish Patient Safety Authority (DPSA)

Once your EPIC verification is underway or complete, you can apply for official authorization from the Danish Patient Safety Authority. DPSA compares your education and experience with Danish standards.

Key Requirements:

  • Submit online application on en.stps.dk.
  • DPSA application form and EPIC verification reports.
  • Certified copies of degree, license, and transcripts.
  • Proof of recent medical experience (if applicable) and Translation (if not in English/Danish).
  • Application fee (approx. DKK 3,500).

The process involves passing the Danish Language Test – “Prøve i Dansk 3” and completing Adaptation/Employment training under supervision. Get final authorization to work independently as a doctor. The full authorization process can take 2–5 years, depending on document processing and test availability.

Step 3: Apply for Residence Permit / Visa (Nyidanmark)

Once you have DPSA acceptance or eligibility confirmation, you can apply for a Danish residence permit under the Authorisation Scheme. This is done through Nyidanmark.dk.

Key Visa Requirements:

  • Proof of DPSA application or conditional approval.
  • Sufficient financial means (approx. DKK 40,000+).
  • Passport, photographs, and health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of visa fee.

This visa allows you to stay in Denmark to complete your authorization process, prepare for language and medical tests, and search for adaptation employment in hospitals. Since July 2024, holders of the Authorisation Residence Permit are exempt from separate work permit requirements, simplifying the process for healthcare professionals.
