Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is one of Canada’s premier medical schools serving the Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Established as a leading institution in medical education, Dalhousie Medicine offers a comprehensive 4-year MD program designed to train competent and compassionate physicians for the Maritime region and beyond.
The Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine program is a 4-year MD program with integrated clinical training. It is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Dalhousie’s MD program stands out for its unique characteristics:
The main campus is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Urban Campus), with additional sites including the Cape Breton campus and clinical training sites across the Maritimes. On March 7, 2023, Premier Tim Houston announced a $58.9 million investment to develop a new medical sciences building at Cape Breton University, which will house the medical school campus slated to open in 2025. The Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) admits 30 Nova Scotia students each year, offering an opportunity to study medicine in Sydney. Students across the three campuses make up one MD class, follow the same curriculum, and all will graduate with medical degrees from Dalhousie University.
A minimum of 3 years (90 credit hours) of undergraduate study is required, and a Bachelor’s degree must be completed or in progress by the year of entry. There are no specific prerequisite courses required, and no full-time course load requirements, though maintaining a full academic schedule is recommended.
Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine has different GPA requirements based on residency status. For Maritime Applicants (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island), the minimum GPA varies based on MCAT score using a sliding scale, while non-Maritime Canadian Applicants face significantly higher GPA requirements due to limited seats.
Multiple MCAT attempts are allowed, and the best score is considered. MCAT scores must be from tests taken on or before August 9, 2025, for the 2025/2026 application cycle.
Dalhousie uses a holistic evaluation approach considering clinical exposure, research experience, community service, and leadership. A new Black Learners Admissions Pathway was recently approved for the 2023/2024 application cycle to help facilitate entrance for Black students by assessing applications using a holistic file review. This pathway aims to diversify the healthcare workforce by adjusting the admissions process to be more equitable.
Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine uses a two-section application process. Section 1, containing basic applicant information, must be completed to access Section 2, which includes personal statements, essays, and campus preference ranking.
The following data represents students who entered in 2024, and who will graduate in 2028:
The overall acceptance rate is approximately 8.3%, with the Maritime acceptance rate at approximately 20.8%.
